Al Badayer vs Big Red: Where Your Dune Buggy Tour Actually Goes

Most dune buggy and desert safari tours out of Dubai run at one of two spots: Al Badayer, out past Dubai Silicon Oasis, or Big Red, further along the Dubai-Hatta road. We run our tours at Al Badayer, and there’s a real, practical reason for that beyond just convenience.

What Actually Sets Al Badayer Apart

Al Badayer’s dunes are genuinely red — deeper, richer colour than the sandier stretches near Big Red, and it’s a proper conservation reserve area rather than a single roadside dune everyone funnels through. Big Red gets its name for a reason and is a legitimate spot, but it also draws a huge volume of tour operators running convoys through a comparatively compact stretch, especially on weekend evenings.

At Al Badayer we’ve got more room to actually spread a group out and ride our own guided route rather than queuing behind a dozen other operators’ convoys doing the same loop. If you’ve done a big-group Big Red tour before and found it felt more like traffic than desert, that’s the difference Al Badayer makes.

Where This Fits Into a Dubai Trip

It’s about 45 minutes from Downtown or Marina, similar from JBR or Business Bay — genuinely a drive, not a quick hop, but that’s true of any real desert tour out of the city; Big Red isn’t meaningfully closer. We base out of Dubai Silicon Oasis, which puts us on the more direct route out compared with operators based further into the city.

Does the Location Change What You’re Booking?

No — whether it’s a buggy rental, a quad bike ride, or a full desert safari, the vehicle, duration, and price are what they are regardless of which desert area a given operator uses. The location just affects the actual on-dune experience — and it’s the reason we’ve stuck with Al Badayer since we started running tours here rather than switching to the busier spot.
